He appeared to be of the opinion that he owed the cat upstairs a great many punches, so I think he got out by violence, rather than going through the hole.
He didn’t escape through the hole… he likely went THROUGH THE CAT and out the door with that box XDD
…or even better, perhaps he beat up the cat and stuffed him in the box, and brought him along for a fun walk in the woods at night
